The parade dates back to 1975 when it was originally organized by The Woodlands Lions Club. The first parades started at the Oak Ridge North shopping strip mall, crossed I-45 (yes, traffic was held!) and proceeded along Woodlands Pwky, ending at the item of interest for that year – “the bottom of the lake” (as Lake Woodlands was being dug out!), the Grogan's Mill Village Shopping Center, the first Park-n-Ride off Budde Rd, etc.
The South County 4th of July Committee was organized in the early 1990’s. The committee is a volunteer-based organization and was designated as a 501(c)(3) corporation in 2001. Last year, the parade had approximately 145 entries and 2,000 to 3,000 participants. This year the committee anticipates 20,000 to 25,000 in attendance. The parade route is approximately 1.3 miles and begins and ends at The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
